Your immune system can be bulletproofed if you know these secrets to super immunity.
Most people who struggle with infections from respiratory to urinary tract to skin, are depleted and exhausted in immune function. This can happen because you were exposed somewhere along the way to an overwhelming infection and nowhere along the way in school did any teacher tell you the things that build immunity and the things that damage immunity. Our culture as a whole, prefers to wait until we are sick and then have medicine hopefully save the day with cutting edge antibiotics, immunotherapy (you can’t watch TV without seeing 3 drugs per hour, with names you can’t pronounce, for autoimmune diseases) or chemo and radiation. This is not health nor does it build health. Health is your body’s ability to adapt to the environment. Disease happens when it can’t respond or adapt.
All dis-ease states can be defined as the inability of the body to adapt. Let’s focus on adapting to a virus for today. All the media, the governors, the president and the CDC are all working on plans for yout to avoid the virus. Masks, gloves, staying away from everyone…. Let’s assume that those measures helped. The answer is not clear just yet. But let’s say it does. That’s going to work for a bit, but eventually you must leave your house. You DO have to go back to making a living. Your kids DO have to interact with others at some point. How are you going to get your body to defend itself when you can get out and about again?
You can wait for the vaccine. Vaccines “work” by the way. Many think I am anti-vax because they think they don’t work. They “work” but they are unsafe. Nobody tests, nobody measures the safety. But, let’s talk about efficacy. how well will it or could it work? In the case of a single stranded RNA virus, they kind of work. Because it’s easier for a single strand to change its makeup, any vaccine may seem to help initially, but once the virus mutates or evolves, it won’t any longer. This has been shown already with other coronaviruses. Maybe not this one, but that is a concern. The other concern is what vaccines are intended to do in the first place, “prime” the immune system. In this particular pathogen, one main mechanism of death is a hyper response by the immune system (cytokine storm) causing respiratory distress or other organ failure. An example of a vaccine for single stranded RNA virus causing even worse hyper response of the immune system is the Swine Flu vaccine. Many suffered neurological damage as the immune system was kicked into overdrive when the vaccinated came in contact with the virus. Thousands were left permanently partially paralyzed by Gullain Barre Syndrome. So, the upshot of this is waiting for a vaccine to protect us isn’t going to be a bulletproof or completely safe solution. I will not be signing up.
I WILL work on my immune system.
Dial up your immune system to 11.
- Is that a 100% guarantee? Nope.
- Is it safe? Yes. 100%.
It also has other benefits in addition to a concern about this particular virus. So, there does not seem to be a reasonable argument not to do these simple things I’m going to lay out for you.
Here they are in short list and I’ll explain after:
Your nervous system goes between sympathetic and parasympathetic dominance to keep you alive. Sympathetic to dial up your skeletal muscles and blood sugar to run away from a lion. And parasympathetic dominance to procreate, growth and repair. Parasympathetic is your immune system. It is dominant when sleeping. That’s when you repair. So, sleep is essential. Figure our your pillow and mattress so you can sleep uninterrupted. Go to bed at the same time everyday. 8 hours or as near to it as you can get. Supplements that help include 5 HTP for serotonin production. It is safe because it is an amino acid, food basically. It is a precursor to serotonin, the sleep and happiness chemical in your body. And magnesium, which helps skeletal muscle relax.. Well, all muscle really. It will lower blood pressure a smidge and calm the brain down that doesn’t want to quit talking to you at 2am.
Lots of people ask about melotonin. It’s a hormone. I’m not a fan of adding hormones to the bloodstream. It’s not terrible. I’ve used it for jet lag for a day or two to get back to this time zone when I’ve been 9 hours off for a month. But, don’t recommend for long term tool to sleep. Rely on 5 HTP , magnesium and exercise as the main tools.
Lavender essential oil helps some relax.
It’s an antioxidant. If your body is fighting off germs, there will be lots of “dead germ bodies” laying around that need to be oxidized in cleaning up after a fight with bacteria and viruses.
D3 really, but nobody uses D2 anymore so just D will suffice. This helps your immune system in many ways. Not just for colds and strep throat protection. But also helps in your body identifying and killing cancer cells. No reason not to include this inexpensive supplement in your daily routine.
There are books being written everyday about this new frontier and understanding of how “bugs” interact with our own physiology. We know now that bacteria help us digest our food, make neurotransmitter chemicals for us, make vitamins for us in our gut, create mass for stool so we don’t get constipated, but mostly what we are learning lately is the makeup of the strains of bacteria on us and in us, we call the microbiome, protect us from bad bugs and viruses. Like a healthy lawn won’t have much room for dandelions, a healthy microbiome won’t let pathogens set up house in your body.
There are so many strains of bacteria and we are only just beginning to learn how they interact with our own physiology, for now, we are just using a “shotgun” approach. More is better. In the future we may be able to tell you which bacteria do what for you. That’s not today.
Today, we recommend using 50-100 billion “bugs” of multiple strains per day. I use Visbiome. 112.5 billion per capsule and its 8 different strains. It’s about the most economical. Helps regulate bowel and I just don’t deal with any coughs or colds etc… Perhaps I’m just fortunate.
The virus that has the world turned upside down activates an immune response that for some gets out of hand and suffocates them because they can’t exchange oxygen or causes body wide inflammation resulting in kidney failure or cardiac failure. We are now hearing of a system wide inflammatory condition in children called Kawasaki Syndrome, a system wide inflammation.
So, mitigate inflammation by cleaning up your diet. We all eat too much inflammatory foods. Sugar and things that turn to sugar. It’s not table sugar. It’s bread, pasta, mashed potatoes, french fries, crackers, bagels, chips, rice…. anything in a box. If it says “low fat” that means high sugar.
Use grass fed or range animal proteins. Add omega 3 supplement. 1,500 mg of EPA/DHA daily. See previous video on this.
It runs everything. It is fact that if your nervous system can’t communicate from your brain to your body or vice versa, you will experience health problems related to the specific area of nerves impaired. We recognize numbness and tingling as a nerve problem. Sciatica, stress headache, carpal tunnel…. etc…. everyone gets that. But, nerves are responsible for chemical balance, heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar, serotonin levels…. well, everything. There is no cell or process in your body that can operate independent of your nervous system’s control. Impaired nervous system due to spine misalignment causes disease. It’s that simple.
Does that mean a misaligned spine causes impaired immune system? Yes. Either directly or by virtue of wasting energy trying to work around it and adapt. Does that make you more susceptible to THIS virus? Maybe. Nobody knows anything about this virus.
Government and other health officials are doing their best with what they know. But, they know very little about what keeps us healthy. So far it has amounted to advising us to wrap ourselves in bubble wrap and stay inside until the threat passes. When will it pass? Oh, we don’t know. Not only when, we don’t know IF it will pass.
In conclusion it seems reasonable to Turn up the Dials on your immune system. If you feel better staying home, wearing a mask and gloves, do so. You can still do these things in addition.
Stay safe by improving your immune system.

Step one: What’s it look like for you? Are you happy with the way things are with your health, family, job or fun? If you’re like me, there’s SOMETHING that isn’t exactly the way you’d like it.
Today, we’re going to focus on the health aspect since everyone’s coming off a holiday week where it’s hard to stay on track eating and working out. I can tell you that last year, was not so great for me. I even developed sore elbow joints, knees and wrists because I succumbed and ate one too many cookies or something. I thought I was getting old. I’m thinking, ”what the heck! This is what people come in complaining of. Now it’s happening to ME?” It took me til mid January to realize it was the “falling of the wagon” that caused that. So, step one for me was, I needed my life to look like it did prior to that holiday season. I wake up without an alarm clock. I don’t have aches and pains. I don’t get the coughs, colds, influenza stuff. Pretty much enjoy pain free, happy go lucky health. Sometimes just getting back to where you were is good enough.
Step two: Happy go lucky health isn’t an accident. There are steps to follow and a price to be paid for not following them. So, decide how much health you want.
We use a scale in here on your initial paperwork. The question is “How willing are you to change your lifestyle to achieve your health goals?” Rate that on a 1-10 scale. This changes over time for people. As much as the platitudes will admonish ‘There’s nothing more important than your health’, I can tell you after caring for people for 28 years, that frequently people decide there ARE more important things than their own health. Moms are notorious for putting kids before themselves for decades. Guys are notorious for putting everything from the house to the pontoon or ’63 Stang in the garage, ahead of their health. These are generalizations to be sure, but you know these people. They are real choices that real people make in different seasons of life. So, decide for yourself for 2020.
It’s your life. You call it like you see it. So, if the answer is you rate your willingness to change at 3 out of 10, don’t beat yourself up for your health experience. Just accept you’ve chosen other priorities for now. Call it good if you cut back to a half pack a day, or only a couple cans of soda per week.
If you’re kind of a 5 ish person, well, you can make some progress. That’s where you are willing to look at a couple areas and make small improvements in activity levels and junk food consumption. Great.
If you’d rate yourself a 7 or 8, well then, explore what area is going to be easiest to dig in and improve the most for 2020, but work on all of them.
If you’re going to say, 10.. I’m not going to accept anything less than my best… well, then make sure you’re coming to all the workshops this year. Focus across the board. From your spine, to nutrition, to workout, to relationships, to spirituality and your retirement account. You will need to change where you get your information, how many books you read, how you take care of yourself, etc… beginning with making your bed everyday.
I watched a biography of Luciano Pavarotti yesterday. He’d survived life threatening illness as a child and vowed that he would enjoy every sunny day, every thing to eat, every song, every friendship….. Exemplified in a disagreement with record company over an exclusive contract. The record company exec called him up furious to learn that Pavarotti was making recordings with his wife, because she wanted him to and he enjoyed it. Pavarotti claimed he did not know his contract meant he couldn’t record for anyone else. Seems a bit naive to me, but anyway, Pavarotti says “Life is too short for this”. Meaning, limiting himself to this record company. He didn’t care what it cost in money, fame or future fortune. He was focused on enjoying his life and doing what made him and his family happy. He parted ways with the contract by paying a sum of money to be done. There ARE more important things in life….
And one of the most important is life itself. His then adult daughter (older than his then wife) quoted him as he was dying as saying he felt cheated in life. He finally had a wife he loved and a new baby, and here he was dying of pancreatic cancer.
Pavarotti, clearly winning on all fronts, rockstar status, no financial concerns at all, homes here and there, ladies’ man. He had it all…. and his only regret was his health.
So, yes… pick an area of your life to work on for 2020, but recognize that health has the largest return on investment. January then, is when we get focused.
So, if that’s where you want to improve, our next workshop is going to be on fasting. Fasting isn’t just for weight loss. It “resets” the immune system. Fights cancer. Reverses type 2 diabetes. Clears the brain. And, yes, teaches your body to burn fat for fuel.
That’s going to be
Monday, January 20th 6:15 PM in Oakdale 651 -777-3611 to register
Tuesday, January 21st 6:15 PM in Edina 952-835-0006 to register
We will be doing more workshops this year. Shopping Tours, Detox, Weight Loss etc… pretty much all things that you need to get healthier for 2020.
We look forward to seeing you.
Yours in Health,
I was recently thinking of a time a couple of years ago. We delivered gifts to one family on a Friday evening, over in Minneapolis. They lived on the upper floor of an older duplex. 2 of the kids met us at the door at the bottom of the stairs and we carried the first arm loads upstairs. At the top of the stairs was the very nice woodwork, wood flooring, wooden archways you’re accustomed to seeing in those early 20th century homes. Immediately at the top of the stairs was a large living room and another large living room space in the middle of the house. Aside from the old radiator heater, there was an old loveseat and a couch in the first room overlooking the street. No rugs, no curtains, no end table, coffee table, pictures… nothing. A 4-year-old slept on the couch and didn’t wake up as we came thru chatting. Through the wonderful old dark wood arch was the second, nearly identically sized large room with 2 closed doors on the left wall with a good space between them. I suppose these went to a bath and a bedroom. There was one open doorway on the far end of the room which I suppose went to the kitchen as it had no door. In this spacious room was only a 3 foot tall pine tree on the floor between those two doors on the left. No decorations, just a tree. No rug again, no chair, couch, table, end table, pictures, curtains…. nothing in the room… just that tree… which at that size it would’ve fit on a table, but there was no table, so there it was, on the floor.
Standing between the rooms with my hands full of gifts, it didn’t seem necessary to ask where to put them, but I did just the same. The pre-teen kids made a couple trips back downstairs with us to get the rest. When we were done, the pile of gifts eclipsed the small tree. You couldn’t see it anymore. It was a stark picture. The empty room with now a pile of Christmas gifts on the floor on the left side of this big empty room. I turned around to face the first large room and the two couches, the 4-year-old was still sleeping somehow. She’s gonna wake up and truly think Santa was there while she slept.
This was the family where the grandmother had just “rescued” her grandkids from a tough situation out of state and was now caring for them. They had nothing. I made a comment on the t-shirt the boy was wearing, a band name on the front he couldn’t possibly know of as it was from my era. I was excited and asked where he got the shirt thinking it would come with a story about some uncle or someone he knew who saw the band. I don’t remember if it was his grandma or him that offered “WalMart. 4 dollars.” Oh, yes, of course. The kid was wearing clothes, not making a statement. He really didn’t have the luxury of making a statement. They were just clothes…. from WalMart.
I couldn’t think of anything else to give them so I gave the boy who helped us the Santa hat I was wearing. Juli gave hers to the girl. Maybe THAT will be a story he tells someone when he’s older and can return the favor to someone else. Meanwhile, the 4-year-old never woke up. Grandma was in tears, thankful. As an aside to this story, grandma didn’t sign up to be on the list to receive gifts, someone had done it for her. She was surprised and beyond grateful. The families are without exception, blown away by the generosity of strangers to them. It ultimately, IS what Christmas is about.
These people have nothing. Most of us have cell phones, cable tv, cars and we don’t think twice about it and worry about what vacation we’d like or boat or whatever toy… we are so fortunate that way. We worry about wants. This family literally, has almost nothing. It is, like every year, humbling and gives me a sense of how blessed we are and makes me feel guilty for complaining about anything.
I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been around so long now or because it really was a more difficult year this year for families here losing loved ones. I’d also like to say a few words to those families who’ve lost a loved one, because sadly, that person won’t be here to gather over the holiday. It is the toughest time of year for you. It feels like there’s nothing left in your tank. It’s hard to feel merry and like celebrating when it feels like there’s a big hole right in the middle of your Christmas wreath. Well, the same spirit that was gift giving for those families we ‘adopted’, is in all the people around you. Everyone really wants to help. Even though you don’t feel like it, please allow others to ‘gift’ you with a visit and their presence. It will not fill the hole. It will build a bridge over it so you can carry on. You won’t forget. The hole is still there. This won’t be the last holiday you work at celebrating without them. Let your friends and family carry you. We got this one.
Wishing you all a wonderful Holiday Season,
Here is a little story I wanted to share with you about the mindset of Chiropractic approach vs. Medical.
Enjoy and be well!
In the early 20th century, Dr. Charles Mayo, physician, surgeon and co-founder of the famed Mayo Brothers Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, brought his wife for treatment to the Dr. B.J Palmer Chiropractic Research Clinic in Davenport, Iowa.
Dr. Mayo had taken his wife to the other physicians, including doctors in Europe, all distinguished diagnosticians and specialists had agreed upon a diagnosis – osteochondromatosis of the knee joint. They had tried everything medical to heal Mrs. Mayo but all treatment had failed.
Dr. Mayo brought his wife to Dr. Palmer for his chiropractic professional services. He addressed Dr. Palmer as Mr. Palmer. To this Dr. Palmer replied: “This is a case of Greek meeting Greek; a test of steel against steel’ a test of our simple chiropractic principle and practice against your complex medical theories and experiments.”
Dr. Palmer ordered spinographs (x-rays) taken of Mrs. Mayo’s spine.
“Mr. Palmer, why are you only taking spinal x-rays?” queried Dr. Mayo.
“Because, we are going to locate the vertebral subluxation cause of her sickness, so we can correctly adjust it.” Replied Dr. Palmer.
Dr. Mayo rejoined, “There is no such thing, and if there were, you couldn’t adjust it by hand only.”
“Dr. Mayo,” Dr. Palmer said to the world-renowned clinician, “while you are here, we are going to ask you to remain silent.”
Dr. Palmer performed readings with the neurocalometer and neurocalograph, then analyzed the patients spinographs. Afterward, he gave her an upper cervical chiropractic adjustment to release spinal cord compression from the vertebral occlusion in her spinal canal.
After the chiropractic adjustment, Dr. Mayo asked, “Is that all you are going to do? What is wrong with my wife? Where is she sick? What is your diagnosis”
Dr. Palmer replied, “We don’t know. What is more, we don’t care.”
“You are a very ignorant man,” retorted Dr. Mayo.
“We are ignorant of everything you think we should know,” countered B.J.
After a pause, Dr. Palmer spoke again. “You, too, are a very ignorant man. You are ignorant of everything we think you should know about the cause of disease in the backbone of sick people. We know cause; you know there is a difference, or you wouldn’t be here. That’s the difference in your approach, which has done your wife no good, and our approach, which will get your wife well.”
“That remains to be seen,” Dr. Mayo replied.
Dr. Palmer continued: “I am ignorant of everything you think I should know about disease of the sick. You know all this, and what good has it done your wife? The fact that you brought her here proves your methods have failed. Because of reports of the success of our methods of vertebral subluxation and adjustment, you brought your wife here to us.”
Mrs. Mayo received chiropractic care for several months and went home well. Dr. Mayo stated it was impossible for her to get well with what Dr. Palmer did, yet he also admitted she was well.
Dr. Palmer expounded: “Medical doctors are concerned in knowing everything about effects, while chiropractors are vitally concerned in the cause in the backbone and how to correct it. What a difference between medical care and chiropractic care! A patient can come to the B.J. Palmer Chiropractic Clinic and be deaf, dumb and blind – not telling or indicating anything – we could and would locate the cause of whatever, wherever they had it; we adjust them and send them home well. It is as simple as that.”
I was on the staff of the B.J. Palmer Chiropractic Clinic in 1953-54. Although “Dr. Charlie” had passed away in 1939, during that time, 60-80 percent of our patients were referred by “someone” on the staff of the Mayo Clinic.
By L. Ted Frigard, DC PhC
We read a lot lately about Preppers, SHTF and Doomsday scenarios and what we should be doing to prepare for emergency situations. Living in the Midwest, we aren’t subject to earthquakes and hurricane food, water and gasoline shortages. If you follow any Prepper sites advice, where you live doesn’t matter. There’s always a risk of catastrophe of some sort and you should be prepared. There’s always the threat of foreign powers disrupting the fuel or power supply. Heck, right now, the threat is probably most from Washington D.C. and the political power struggle there. Never mind China, Russia or ISIS. It’s our political parties creating the most risk right now.
I was in Utah for a week with my kids speedskating at the Olympic Oval a few years back. Because we were there so long, we went to the supermarket for food rather than eating out all the time. One of the standout sights at the supermarket in Salt Lake City, were the aisles full of institutional sized cans and jars on the shelves. Far more than your typical Sams or Costco. This was to serve the large contingent of Mormons who regard it as their duty to be prepared, not only to care for their own families, but others as well.
I have a couple thoughts on this:
First, why not? We have insurance on our house, our cars, our health (well, that’s not insurance but we pay the premium anyway). We invest for a rainy day. The cost of having a month or 6 of food and water, always on hand, is certainly less than a year to insure your car. Makes sense. That’s insuring our food supply.
Second, the preparation in food supply and water is important, but what about the preparation of our bodies? Have we insured our health? I’m not talking about paying your health plan premiums. Really, if there is no gasoline and you need to get somewhere, you’re going to have to walk, run or ride a bike or something. Can you walk or run a mile or two right now? What kind of physical preparation can we make for this situation? Can your hips and knees take the extra weight we’ve been carrying around? Consider that you may need to obtain water from a distant source if the grid goes down and it no longer comes out of our faucets. How able are we to move 5 or 10 gallons of water at 8 pounds per gallon, a few miles? What if the natural gas supply gets cut off? Are you prepared to cut and split wood to supplement heating your home? This is the kind of thing Preppers think about.
Making sure that we can do these essential things is real health insurance. Paying our premiums to health plans in exchange for paying some of our medical expenses doesn’t insure our health. It ensures somebody’s gonna get paid to treat our disease but does not insure our health.
In the Past:
When I was growing up in the 60s, there were Duck and Cover exercises at school because the world wasn’t terribly stable. We’ve enjoyed a few decades of stability but lately I’d say the world is coming back to that Duck and Cover state. I was a child then, I can’t gauge what the adult politicians’ rhetoric was relative to today’s talks of impeachment, treason etc…. But, clearly, we are entering a less stable day to day than a decade ago.
What to do:
So, do nothing or get ready? For me, that means making sure my family is healthy now, so if things get more difficult in the future, we are prepared as we can be. Physically as well as shelter, food and water. That’s why my family gets adjusted at least weekly. We limit our inflammation inducing foods and maximize our fresh, organic nutrient intake. That’s what is going to prevent arthritis and the physical limitations that come with it. Making sure we are keeping fit to perform up to task if our lives depend on it.
Fortunately, no one in our family uses medication and would not be dependent on the supply chain in some upheaval. If you are, now is a good time to start reversing the disease process if possible. This can be done for lots of things. The top prescribed medications are for thyroid, cholesterol, asthma, heartburn and diabetes. Many times these can be reversed by adopting the lifestyle measures we teach at Vibrant Life Center. Now is a good time to start.
The best place to start is where the people live those principles. Don’t “ask your doctor” who prescribed the stuff unless he or she is free of medications themselves. Otherwise, it’s like asking poor people how to make a million dollars. Don’t ask sick people for advice on health. Ask healthy people how they did it and do it too. No need to reinvent the wheel. The rules of getting healthy haven’t changed. We’ve just been sold some bad advice. I’ll leave it to you to decide from whom.
Johnson and Johnson ordered to pay Oklahoma $572 million for opioid damages.
Now, this sounds like a lot of money and it is… until you consider that in the early years of the opioid explosion, Duragesic, one of two opioids marketed by J and J, brought in over $500 million way back in 2001. Let’s assume sales of opioids remained level from that point on. They haven’t but this will make the math easy. That’s about 20 years of $500 million a year. It’s more from 2011 on, about $800k per year. But for easy math, let’s just say $15 billion has been made selling this one version of fentanyl to roughly 1 million people per month.
How it Started:
The conditions under which a drug like this is necessary is intractable chronic pain, that of cancer etc.. The rules of prescribing pain meds 25 years ago were quite restrictive and people in this situation suffered quite a bit. A relaxing of the rules so that people in serious pain could get some relief was met with approval from the providers caring for people in this situation.
Unfortunately, with all things mandated to be paid for by a 3rd party, like drugs, college tuition, daycare in Minnesota, somebody’s going to come up with a way to rig the system….. to make a pile of money.
Johnson and Johnson certainly aren’t the only players to have figured out where to concentrate their sales’ team efforts. There were others but they seem to have been the most savvy. They marketed only to doctors, who wrote 1,000 prescriptions for opioids per year. They were responsible for the bulk of the market. They just needed them to switch to J & J’s version, Duragesic.
In an even more dastardly plan Johnson & Johnson hired McKinsey and Company, a consulting firm, to increase sales. They recommended they go after males under 40, since they were more likely to abuse their drug than anyone else. J & J denied they did this in the Oklahoma court proceedings.
Ultimately, the court found Johnson and Johnson engaged in misleading marketing to maximize benefits and minimize risks. As a result, 6,000 people died in Oklahoma alone, since the 1990s. That’s a lot more than those dying from school shootings, heart disease, cancer or just about any other thing you can think of.
Where’s the outrage? Where’s the protest? The demands for Congressional action? “Common sense” prescribing laws? No more large capacity prescription bottles! ?????
You will just see this briefly reported on the news and then onto the weather. Just another day in America. Of COURSE people die from medications. We expect it. We do not even seem to be troubled by it. The point for Oklahoma was for financial reparations. And to be fair, the opioid prescriptive process HAS been changed. So, the doctors ARE limited to no large capacity magazines if you will. You can’t just fill a couple month prescription or endlessly be on opioids anymore.
The forces that brought this catastrophe upon our culture operate largely unphased. Yes, $572 million is real money. However, here’s the math in terms we can all understand:
If I had an income of $50,000 per year,
for the last 20 years,
was found to have killed 6,000 people making that $50k a year for 20 years, (that’s $1 million)
and then was fined, say…. $50k and I didn’t have to go to jail??
I’d be happy to pay the $50k!
That’s all this is. The state is shaking down the drug company for some of its money to pay for some of the damage its money-making scheme caused in the state. We all see it as the cost of doing business. It’s true in opioids, it’s true in oncology, it’s certainly true in vaccine dogma…. Except those companies NEVER pay a fine. Which is why there are currently 200 vaccines in development. All profit, never liability. Pretty soon all drugs may be called vaccines, just to avoid liability.
The situations that result in the need for opioids are mostly amenable to chiropractic. Chiropractic however is not part of the insurance reimbursement system that would allow people’s health to recover enough to never need this level of medication. The people that need this are already out of work due to their health. Health plans typically pay for 6-10 visits to the chiropractor. Nobody’s reversing their chronic pain in 2 weeks of going to the chiropractor… I don’t care WHAT exercises people do.
I saw a sign the other day:
“Your body isn’t Amazon. It doesn’t deliver results in 2 days.”
That’s true! In all things health, it is repetition over time.
- If you eat like crap over time, you will pay.
- If you exercise over time you will reap the benefits.
- If you go to the chiropractor over time you will be immensely rewarded.
However, insurers are limited time propositions. They aren’t in it for your health. They are in it for higher premiums every year. They NEED you to be sick and dependent on their stream of benefits. They need you to tell others “Don’t lose your insurance! Keep paying into the system because you will need it one day.” That is the gospel truth if you live like our society teaches. Our society, that has a 1st year infant survival rate near third world countries. Our society, where if you are born today, you are not expected to live as long as your parents. Parents who are being sold Long Term Care Insurance, because we EXPECT to be in a flippin’ nursing home!
This isn’t what you were put on planet earth for. You were put on planet earth to be a blessing to others by doing what only you have been commissioned to do. With the skills that only you, in the history of planet earth and humanity on it, have been gifted with. For as long as you can do that.
Accepting the fearful message that you were born “broken” and need pharmaceuticals to live “normally” is tantamount to a cult. But, we have that in America. We have a cult of pharmacy. A cult of disease worship. Don’t believe me? Guess who gets paid the most in America. Those we worship and look up to. Athletes? Sure. Actors? Yep? Doctors? For almost a century one of the highest paid professions. Right now the highest median income specialty? It used to be the guys who did surgery for wealthy old white men with cardiovascular diseases and bad knees. Both cardiovascular surgeons and orthopedic surgeons’ median pay is about $700k Today however, radiation oncologists are our highest paid. We fear cancer so much, we pay those people over $1 million per year as a median.
If you listen to Suzy Orman about wealth, she doesn’t recommend you ask poor people how to amass wealth. So don’t listen to sick people or the people who make money off them, tell you about health.
Whatever they’re doing in the trailer park to try to become wealthy, do the opposite, their people are poor.
Whatever they’re doing at hospitals and WebMD to get people healthy… run away and do the opposite, their people are sick.
Lifestyle, lifestyle, lifestyle. Not your genes. (if it was your genes we’d all just eat at Dairy Queen every day. Some of us will get sick, some won’t. It’s not our fault.)
Eat healthy most of the time
Exercise most of the time
Sleep with a normal pattern most of the time
Get adjusted regularly, most of the time
THAT will result in the best outcome and most likely, your ability to fulfill your goals, realize your dreams and grow old doing what you want to do – to the very end.
Back To School
Depending on the age of your Back To Schooler, you will have different concerns and activities.
Here are some Tips and Thoughts.
No more than 10% of their body weight. So, your 105lb, 7th grade girl should have no more than 10lbs total. That’s not much. Put it on the scale to check it because the backpacks that I see on many kids are seriously over the limit for child size. Even if the weight is within limits, make sure they’re using both shoulder straps too. Not slung over one shoulder like a heavy purse. The damage that will occur affects their upper back and neck. The upper back damage will not present itself as back pain like in an adult, it presents as exercise induced asthma, respiratory infections and the very common teenage “slump” posture.
This is HUGE. The body uses sleep time to recover, grow and regenerate. Kids are doing a lot of growing. Research has shown that high school kids need even more sleep at that age. 9-11 hours. In fact, the research shows they should be going to school later, not earlier than younger students. The earlier start times for high school frequently results in sleep deprivation symptoms for students. It has been impossible to get school districts to go along with a later start time despite the evidence that the early start times in high school are harming health of the students. It’s going to be difficult, but for high schoolers, 9pm would be ideal, but 10pm is absolutely it. Earlier would be better, but having had a couple of high schoolers myself, I know that’s just not going to be practical for most. Settle for what’s possible here and save the friction for another topic.
Younger kids can go to bed at 9-9:30 and not give you too much grief. That’s going to keep them much healthier than their night owl classmates. Kindergarten / 1st grade? 8-8:30 isn’t a bad idea. This takes discipline throughout the summer though. Lest, they will associate this “punishment” with school.
Large institutions such as schools and corporate daycares as well as hospitals and nursing homes, are the worst for nutrition. They count calories but they don’t count quality. For my kids, quality was and is the goal. We would use the school’s lunch program a couple times per month if we were in a bind and didn’t get food made ahead of time. Like getting home Sunday night from a trip and already… it’s Monday morning. Really, you have to figure out how to sidestep what they’re serving at schools. There’s a couple in the country that are figuring this out with good, healthy foods… but I haven’t heard of that in Minnesota yet. They’re still serving what they served when I went to school. Lots of carbs, fruit cocktail, pizza, burgers ( I have no idea what’s in those, do you?). It’s not the end of the world to eat this stuff… but not on a daily basis. Two things happen. It makes your kid sick and, when you try to teach your kids about healthy foods or heaven forbid, NOT have Doritos or energy bars (candy) in your house… you will have a mutiny on your hands.
The law requires you to hand in the form. The Superintendent of the district must report the overall student body’s vaccine status to the state’s Commissioner of Health. That’s it. It never HAS been “No Shots No School” for any individual child. In addition, for the last 20 years, there is a law that requires schools to include your right to opt out of any and all vaccines, on any communication they print or email you. The law requires this be done in “equal font size”, so it’s not in the fine print and one can miss it. I’ve seen evidence that school districts are not up to speed on this or intentionally ignoring this law. Just know, whether you vaccinate or not, it is up to you. Not the school.
Keep your child healthy
Going back to school exposes them to all kinds of new germs that they didn’t “see” last year. So, plan on them dealing with something in the first month. The best way to make sure they don’t end up on antibiotics is by making sure their nervous system is working as well as possible. That means regular adjustments. Summer has camp and vacations, which can get things off track. Once school starts, that’s the perfect time to regroup and get back on track with adjustment schedules.
If your kid is an athlete, they really need to be checked regularly. The most significant sports for damaging the spine are hockey, football and wrestling. These are contact sports with significant lifelong consequences for those kids who are not being checked regularly. Other sports such as soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming, lacrosse and track are definitely easier on the spine and less damaging but can still cause issues with their alignment. Certainly, kids benefit from some kind of exercise and sport to learn about their talents and teamwork. But, not at the cost of their health. So, getting kids adjusted regularly, to keep them at their best is the easiest and smartest thing to do to stay ahead of any residual illnesses or negative effects.

Some readers may remember my e-mail immediately following the Aurora Colorado theater shooting during a Batman movie some time ago. In that email I made the point that the person who shot all the moviegoers was sick and disconnected from not only himself but the rest of humanity. You would simply have to be disconnected to do such a thing. In my opinion, this would not have happened if he was raised with chiropractic care and I will tell you why.
That email lives in infamy on Theskeptic.com, under the title “One Good Chiropractor and an X-ray Could’ve Prevented Aurora Shooting”. Apparently forwarded by one of my readers who doesn’t share my worldview and enjoined but a host of skeptics. Our phone was ringing asking for the “Batman Chiropractor”, I got lots of emails and nasty responses. It’s the world we live in now. I’m perfectly willing to wither skeptics if someone else can benefit and be who they were destined to be instead of a wasted life and taking others with him. So, here’s another attempt.
Most of you know I lost my parents and 3 sisters from a car accident the first day of summer vacation at the end of 7th grade. I’m no stranger to trauma and loss. These events trigger those feelings for me. My passion for doing something for the people who’ve suffered a loss is maybe higher than most others. So, in addition to praying for the families that have suffered a loss from the crazy guy(s) in a window in Las Vegas, I have a deep-seated desire to do something constructive. But, what can I do?
I could advocate for gun laws. However, I personally hold no hope that the populace can be disarmed. Also, crazy guy could’ve accomplished pretty much the same thing with a pickup truck driven through a crowd. Nobody’s going to advocate a ban on pickups to stop the madness. The event was not driven by the availability of a tool for destruction. Though no one can argue the availability of efficient weapons makes anyone who is crazy, far more dangerous to the rest of us. The event was caused by an individual’s screwed up perception of his environment. Perceiving other people as a threat to him personally or his worldview.
I would like to do something to prevent this from happening again. What is going to make a difference? If you understand that the physiology that causes stress to the level that you think other innocents are a threat to you, comes from an inability to comprehend and respond accurately to your environment, you might consider mental health care a viable option. But the way we apply mental health care is still done via our disease care model. In other words, you must have a diagnosis FIRST. Then, there’s still the argument of how to pay for it for all those diagnosed. The largest issue politically at the moment is how to pay for disease care (it’s not healthcare). In addition, this particular crazy was quite wealthy and payment for mental health care wouldn’t have mattered. He would not have sought it out and even though if examined last week, would’ve been found to be in need of mental health care, those problems start years and years earlier before they can be diagnosed.
In the following days and weeks after we may have found out he WAS under mental care, even if, there is one thing that all mass shooters to date have had in common. It is use of psychotropic medication under mental health care. Antidepressants/stimulants. Either under the influence of legal prescriptive medication during the crime or just coming off of it.
Our culture likes drugs. We just do. Some in our culture even love the whole process of being diagnosed and treated medically or surgically. Some think it gives them individuality to be sick or have sick kids. Crazy, right? Worse, the profit motive by the pharm/med complex with more lobbyists in Washington than bankers, the defense industry or oil, keeps the conversation going in circles exclusively around how to pay for more drugs. We start our children’s education about the wonders of drugs early, beginning with vaccinations and antibiotics for ear infections, inhalers, stimulants so boys will focus, anxiolytics for teenage girls, Accutane for acne and antidepressants for sleep and we now have diabetes affecting kids like never before…. but our solution is drug based. Like it or not, that’s our culture.
What if instead of requiring vaccinations for daycare or kindergarten, you were required to take your child to the chiropractor to make sure she was neurologically fit? Free from any interference that would prevent her from mounting an effective immune response to pneumococcus (supposed most common cause of ear infection), or from not just playing with other kids, but digesting her food, creating healthy new cells as she grows instead of diseased ones. Developing her whole life able to accurately sense and respond to her environment.
What if we lived in a culture that required babies, when born, to be checked by a chiropractor to make sure their nervous system wasn’t damaged in the process of delivery under anesthesia, induced labor or
What if we lived in a culture and required the inattentive grade school boy to be evaluated for upper cervical subluxation causing inability to focus?
What if our culture demanded that the teenage girl be checked by a chiropractor BEFORE she was allowed to be put on Lithium, Wellbutrin or Paxil?
What if we lived in a culture that instead of premarital counseling required premarital chiropractic to optimize gene expression and passing on of healthy genes to the offspring, and maternal care that reduced or avoided birth interventions noted above?
What if the premarital parents’ parents were under chiropractic care THEIR whole life? What would be the effect generations later?
So back to Vegas guy. What if instead of growing up one of the children of a single mother struggling because their father was a criminal and in and out of jail and not a part of their lives, their father was taken to the chiropractor when HE was a child. In addition to normalizing his perception of the world by normalizing the nervous system activity so he would be able to respond more appropriately to those around him, he got the message that HIS parents loved him so much they wanted to make sure he was as healthy and vibrant as he could be. That message is communicated when a parent does things like prepare meals, goes to work to pay the bills for the family and takes the child to the doctor and dentist because he VALUES his child’s health. It doesn’t even need to be spoken. It’s not a stretch to suggest that father might still be parenting the children rather than in jail and the kids raised by their single mom in poverty.
Imagine you are now the child (the potential Vegas shooter), of THAT child raised in chiropractic, now grown and caring for you. In addition to you not missing your dad because he’s in jail, but now by making sure you have a good school, dental care and yes, make sure your nervous system is working at its best so that you can grow and develop to your full potential. Do you think it’s possible you could be this crazy guy that shoots people? I don’t think you could, because you’ve been surrounded by love and acts of love and sacrifice that would be apparent because you might be aware dad would maybe have to forgo a fishing boat or cable tv to make sure his family is healthy.
In my last attempt to connect the dots between nervous system damage caused by spinal subluxation and the inability to comprehend self and respond to environment, I can tell you more than a few thought my position audacious. And it is. But only because I have determined to create and different world for my kids and their kids than our drugged up, broken society which we increasingly accept as the new normal. If it were normal to have your baby checked by the chiropractor at birth…. if it were normal to have the parents checked and adjusted before they conceive….. if it were normal to visit the chiropractor regularly instead of the pill dispensing medical profession, my ideas wouldn’t sound so outlandish. It’s just the brainwashing we’ve all had that makes these ideas sound far-fetched. But, I believe it’s possible to make these changes. Mainly because if you follow the current trend, we are just going to see more and more of this unhinged crime. And most certainly we are going to bankrupt our country trying to keep doing more and more of the same, thinking we’re creating healthy people by prescribing more and “better” drugs.
I am going to keep working to create that new normal. Where EVERYONE gets checked and adjusted. If you would like to see that day too, please help us. Don’t let people walk around all subluxated and unable to sense and respond to their worlds. I saw an interview with the crazy guy’s brother. He was scratching his head for explanations. The explanation is he was disconnected from everyone and everything including the source of creation. Now that’s a big way to describe nerve interference which we commonly use the common descriptors of some of the effects of that process, like headaches and sciatica. However, it comes with far more impactful problems for some. Like depression, psychosis and paranoia. I’m not saying it’s the only cause of these things. (I just finished a book that blames the gut microbiome for these very same problems)… but people regularly in a chiropractic office where the doctors understand it ain’t about back pain, will learn how to eat healthy and create lifestyle changes that support normal function and health. This happens primarily due to better connection between man the physical and man the spiritual via the nervous system. If that were normal in our culture, that level of crazy would be unheard of or extremely rare.
Yesterday I and the other doctors rewrote our mission statement to clarify this. Here it is:
Vibrant Life Center
Creating Hope, Health and Happiness
Optimizing Nervous Systems, Nutrition, Lifestyle Coaching and Community Education to Spread World Peace.
Think that’s audacious? So, do I. As noted earlier, I have an acute appreciation for how short life can be. I’ve got to make a difference while I’m here.
Autism and Insomnia
A frequent challenge for parents of kids on the spectrum is they have a tough time sleeping. The first time I ran across this was years and years ago. 10-year-old Karoline came to our clinic after her parents met us at the Autism 5k at Lake Calhoun. Mom and Dad were stressed to say the least. Not only had Karoline never slept more than 2 hours consecutively in her entire life, she also got stressed out in crowds. Both Mom and Dad were working full time. Because of this, one worked days and one worked nights so someone was always up with Karoline. That prevented the family from going out to dinner, going to Target, going to a movie…. pretty much all the family things that you and I don’t even think about.
Karoline was quite shy and went along with our examination as she could sense we were trying to help. Also, Karoline was nonverbal. She had just received an iPad with the app to tap out sentences and was just starting to communicate with her parents. She was sharing her likes, dislikes, wants and desires, with actual words.
There wasn’t anything particularly unusual about Karoline’s spinal subluxation compared to other kids. We just set about correcting what we found was misaligned and interfering/irritating her spinal cord. I called the next day to check on the family, as I always do. Mom was quite disturbed and questioning me about “what did you do to my child!”. After a few questions of my own, I learned that Karoline had slept 12 hours after her first adjustment. THAT was the source of mom’s agitation. She thought something was now WRONG. In fact, something was now finally RIGHT. Parents of kids not on the spectrum wouldn’t be troubled by a 12-hour sleeping stint at 10 years old. This mother of one child, Karoline, had never ever had this happen. She was rightly worried that something different was going on and wasn’t quite sure what it meant.
Once assured that this is how it works with kids, she’d just never experienced it, she was OK and we followed up with Karoline’s visits, checking and adjusting. The next week, Karoline’s father turned up in the office. I hadn’t met him prior because he worked as a baker so his hours were late morning and he was on sleep shift during Karoline’s first few visits. I came out of the exam room and he was sitting in our massage chair. A stocky Norwegian (literally, thick accent immigrant with Karoline’s mother), these guys are notorious for being stoic and little emotion. He waved me over to talk with him about Karoline. As I approached, he stood up out of the chair, I wasn’t quite sure if he was happy or not. The look on his face wasn’t happy. He said, however, “Whatever you did, this is the first time I know I have a daughter.” He pointed two fingers in a V and pointed to my eyes and then to his eyes…. “She looked me in the eyes! This is the FIRST time. I NOW know I have a daughter.!” He welled up in tears and as I write this, it makes me tear up again. It was quite emotional for both of us. For me, because I hadn’t counted the impact this situation was having on the parents. For him, because I think he realized he’d missed 10 years of his daughter’s life.
No matter. We move forward. That Walk for Autism was in the spring. It was cold and rainy. I took care of Karoline from that week forward and by Fall, their lives were nearing normal. Each week mom would come in telling us of some big achievement which typically, we wouldn’t be thinking was any great stretch. Like going to Red Lobster, taking a trip to a friend’s cabin in Wisconsin, going to the State Fair. Yes, any 10 year should be able to enjoy those things with her parents and now they were.
Sadly, this is still happening to many others and with the rate of ASD still climbing, it’s happening more and more often.
The Medical/Pharmaceutical approach:
If you take your ASD insomniac to the pediatrician, here’s what the American Academy of Pediatrics has to say, in a nutshell: “The first line is behavioral training. If you’ve ruled out organic causes, then pharmacologic therapy may be initiated. There are no FDA approved treatments for insomnia in children.”
Basically, there’s no safety testing but if your child isn’t sleeping, we will prescribe something for them. That just doesn’t inspire much confidence. At the very least, whatever drug prescribed should be tested for safety, if not effectiveness. Neither one of these texts exist. Still…. that’s the state of medical help.
Now, families with kids on the spectrum fall into a couple of camps and some in between. There’s the “My child is gifted but different” and the other camp is “My child has been damaged and needs a cure.” The gifted camp doesn’t think a cure is required, it’s just another version of normal. The damaged camp desperately seeks cures or treatments.
Chiropractic doesn’t fit either camp’s concerns. Everybody thinks their kids are normal and don’t need chiropractic… until they find out how much more “normal” they can be. Less sick days, less tummy aches, less problems overall, once they start getting regular adjustments. ASD kids who aren’t sleeping are no exception.
Chiropractic isn’t a treatment for insomnia, autism, ADHD, headaches or sciatica. It’s a tune up for your kids’ nervous system. So, their brain will be better focused on the test at school. Her foot will be better able to balance on the balance beam. His arm will be like a laser passing the football. His immune system won’t be searching for “invisible” threats and requiring an inhaler to keep breathing. THAT’s how it works.
Chiropractic works. It’s safe. It is common sense.
Don’t wait 10 years of your child’s life to find out how much better they can be!
